Baby, Infant & Newborn Circumcisions in our Western Sydney Practice
Infant: Newborn & Baby Circumcisions
Baby circumcisions are generally performed within the first 4 weeks of the infant’s life, however Dr Sheen does perform circumcisions up to 6 months of age.
We focus on patient care and customer service. Our doctor and nurse work together to provide your son with exceptional, personalised care.
Dr Sheen uses the Plastibell Technique. This technique has been used for many years and has been chosen because of its ease of use, few complications and consistently good results.

The Plastibell Technique
Dr Sheen uses the Plastibell Technique. Under anaesthetic, a small plastic ring is positioned between the head of the penis and the foreskin. A string is then double tied securely around the foreskin, gently compressing it against the ring before the excess skin is removed.
The ring remains in place for up to 7 days. It often falls off naturally on its own but if after a week this has not happened it is easily removed.

Initial Consultation
Dr Sheen likes to see you and your baby for an initial consultation. At this, Dr Sheen explains the in detail the procedure, ensures that it is suitable for your baby and discusses a consent form for the circumcision.
Dr Sheen believes that this face face consultation is mutually beneficial.
However, if you live a long way from our location – say more than 45 minutes – then the initial consultation can be conducted over the phone.
Procedure Details
On the day of the procedure, please arrive 30 minutes before the procedure. Try to time your son’s feeds so that he has one at the practice, this will help him feel more settled.
Please bring a spare nappy, a wrap, formula (if bottle feeding) and your patience. Our before and after procedure ensures you and your son leave feeling calm and comfortable not pressured and rushed.
It is preferable that the parents leave the practice for 30 minutes while the procedure is being performed. There are a range of cafes nearby. Your son will be in excellent hands, the procedure will be performed while you are out.
Some parents wish to be present during the procedure. Please discuss this with Dr Sheen.
Once you return and spend some time with your son, feeding if necessary, Dr Sheen will make a final check of him before you leave. In total you will be at the practice for about two hours.
After Procedure Care
Once you have left the practice and are home, check the circumcision. If you have any concerns please call the practice. The next day, remove any dressings and bath him as normal.
The Plastibell will fall off between day 2 and day 7. This is completely normal and expected. Once it has fallen off use nappy cream as normal.
Return to the practice 5-7 days after the procedure for a follow up appointment.
