Benefits, risks and considerations of an adult circumcision?

As with any surgical procedure, adult circumcision carries risks and benefits. Some benefits include medical reasons, personal hygiene, religious beliefs, sexual health or personal and partner preferences.

If you are considering an adult circumcision, it is important to weigh up the benefits and risks. At an initial consultation with Dr Sheen you will discuss these factors in detail, along with your expectations and any questions or concerns.

Why men and teens choose to be circumcised

Circumcisions are performed for a range of reasons including:

Improved genital hygiene and ease of cleaning

Religious and cultural beliefs

Medical concerns - Phimosis (tight foreskin)

Medical concerns - Balanitis (inflammation of the foreskin)

Prevention of painful erections and tearing

Scaring known as BXO or Lichen Sclerosis

Whatever the motivation to be circumcised, the key is to make an informed choice that feels right for you. 20% of males have an issue with their foreskin at some stage in their life.

Adult and Teen Circumcision Procedure Details

Dr Sheen uses the free-hand technique, which provides a personalised circumcision with consistently good results.

The procedure is performed under local anaesthetic. The edges are stitched with dissolvable sutures; these remain in place for up to three weeks.

Once the procedure is completed you will be asked to rest up at the practice for a short while.

This is to ensure that everything settles and it is safe to return home.

After Procedure Care

Clear instructions regarding wound care and pain management are provided. Once you have left the practice and are at home, check the circumcision, if you have any concerns please call the practice.

Return to the practice 5-7 days after the procedure for a follow up appointment.
